
P-1 Visa: Athletes and Entertainment Groups
P-1A – Internationally Recognized Athletes
This visa is for athletes coming to the U.S. temporarily to compete at a high level. It covers:
- Individual athletes recognized internationally
- Teams with international recognition
- Professional athletes employed by qualified U.S. teams or minor leagues
- Amateur athletes or coaches from top-level foreign leagues
- Ice skaters in theatrical productions (solo or group)
Competitions must be of a recognized high standard requiring elite participation.
P-1B – Members of Internationally Recognized Entertainment Groups
This visa applies to performers coming to the U.S. as part of a group that:
- Has been established for at least one year
- Is internationally recognized as outstanding
- Has at least 75% of members who’ve been with the group for one year or more
Note: Solo performers are not eligible unless part of a group.
Exceptions:
- Circus performers and essential circus staff don’t need to meet the one-year or international recognition requirements if joining a nationally recognized circus.
- Some U.S.-based groups can request a waiver of the international recognition requirement based on national acclaim.
Support Personnel (P-1S):
Staff essential to the performance like coaches, technicians, camera operators, or stage crew can qualify separately. A separate petition is required with proof of their role and skills.
Family (P-4):
Spouses and unmarried children under 21 may come under P-4 status. They can’t work but can study.
