Permanent Resident Card (Green Card): What You Need to Know
A Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551) is proof of your status as a permanent resident in the United States. It serves as a valid identification document and confirms your eligibility to live and work in the U.S. While some Green Cards do not have an expiration date, most are valid for 10 years. If you were granted conditional permanent resident status, your card will be valid for only 2 years.
It is important to keep your Green Card up-to-date. Without a valid card, it may be difficult to prove your permanent resident status, which could affect your ability to travel or prove your eligibility to work in the United States.
When Should I Renew My Permanent Resident Card?
You should renew your Permanent Resident Card if:
– It was issued for 10 years and has expired or will expire within the next 6 months.
– You have a 2-year conditional card. In this case, you will need to file a petition to remove the conditions on your residence before the card expires. You can file this petition 90 days before your conditional Green Card expires. If approved, you will be sent a new 10-year Green Card.
If your card does not have an expiration date on it, you likely have an older version that is no longer valid. We recommend renewing it to ensure you have an updated and valid card.
When Should I Replace My Permanent Resident Card?
You should apply to replace your Permanent Resident Card if:
– Any information on the card needs to be changed.
– Your card has been lost, stolen, or damaged.
– If you became a permanent resident before turning 14 years old, you are required to replace your card when you turn 14.
